Labour Commit to Save Charing Cross Hospital

Andy Burnham has just announced that a Labour Government would immediately stop all the disastrous changes to our local health service and abandon plans for the demolition of Charing Cross with full A&E services to be retained in North West London Hospitals.

The interesting thing about this rather opportunistic gambit is that it suggests Labour must have known what was coming before the result. It would never have been possible for them to rein back the plan for Charing Cross and the local NHS in general - the site of the hospital has already been sold. They would have known that and therefore didn't suggest this earlier in the campaign. When they knew they were going to lose they could then make commitments they would never have to keep and could promise the moon on a stick. It probably won't have been material in the Hammersmith constituency but probably did convince some people in Ealing Central & Acton and Brentford & Isleworth to vote Labour. In that sense it worked brilliantly.
