Slow broadband in the evenings - bt broadband

Has anybody been experiencing incredibly slow speeds in the evenings due to internet congestion? I have recently switched to BT Broadband, and my download speed goes down to bellow 1Mbps in the evenings. Practically unusable. I didn't have this sort of problem with Sky Broadband.

Weirdly enough this morning I had a phone call from somebody purporting(?) to be from BT saying they had noticed excessive usage of my internet between the hours of midnight and 4am and was anybody using it between that time? My suspicions were roused but thought I would go with the call, so said No.  I was then asked how many things are connected to the internet so I said one.  I was then asked if it was switched on so said No.  I was then asked could I switch it on....yea right(!)....so I said No at which point they ended the call.Luckily I got the number (009 719 710 023) so phoned BT Nuisance call line and spoke to a very helpful lady who said it was definately not from them and it is a scam as they then ask you to start typing in various addresses, want IP address etc.Anyway it has now been reported as by saying they are from BT some unsuspecting sole could have their accounts hacked.

We have the basic copper wire 'free' Talk Talk i/net [+ phone] package which was delivering 10.2 Mbps two minutes ago [Friday 1910 hrs].  We've lost a connection only twice since the T2 internet service was launched years ago.....We are in W12 NXX

Don't know about the evenings but I work from home a lot and my BT connection can suddenly disappear, the hub reboots itself and then it reconnects.  Which causes me no end of problems as it also means I lose my connection to my employers network.
