Post Office Closure - A disaster for Hammersmith

The news that the post office in the shopping centre is closing is yet another blow for Hammersmith. A good proportion of my trips to King Street are made because I am going there and whilst I am there I will shop elsewhere.Isn't now the time for the government to start viewing the Post Office a key asset in binding the community together and supporting local retail trade and not as something that only exists where it can turn a profit?

Killing off state run things is something the Tories do whenever they are in power.  Everybody wants low taxes but they conveniently forget that if you want low taxes then you won't get the services.  That doesn't mean that some changes are not a good thing. Having said that there are a lot of changes in life with so many more things beings done and run online.  Unless you can and do keep up with some of this you do and will become marginalised.  We need to continually look at ways in which to be more inclusive.  It gets harder to get the hang of new technology as you age and it can also be quite frightening with the amount of scamming that goes on.  Charities like www.ageuk.org.uk amongst others are invaluable for help in this regard in pointing people towards help in many ways if not actually being able to help.  Another isolating factor is that the BBC licence fee will only be paid to those on Pension Credit.  Yet there are many many people who are eligible for this but do not claim it.  I understand that the forms - pages and pages of them are difficult to fill in.  So help is needed for that too.

I couldn't agree more with everything that is being said. The concept of public services is being killed off and that is a disaster and a complete scandal.

I thought Kings Mall was effectively being turned into an Ikea. Wouldn't that mean a new post office is unlikely?

And for those who run small businesses, those sending parcels, buying stamps, etc......It may be that the PO is coming back after the Kings Mall redevelopment (we need to know)

I agree totally with Ellen Kearney. The small Post Office opposite the Town Hall does not offer the full range of services, and the Post Office at Westfield is actually on Wood Lane.Can H&F Council please get involved?  This closure raises questions about inequality of access to basic services for those who use mainly cash. They are increasingly marginalised.
