Streetbank - lots of free stuff!
For anyone looking for free items - on your doorstep - you might be interested in a new community initiative I've been involved in setting up called www.streetbank.com. I live in SW6 in one of the Alphabet Streets and created Streetbank because I saw someone with a hedgetrimmer that I wanted to borrow but didn't quite have the courage to ask. This is what Streetbank does - it allows you to see all the things that people in the immediate area (within 1000 yards of your home) are willing to lend, give away or skills they are willing to share. There are already nearly 200 people signed up and busily using it in Hammersmith and Fulham and enjoying effectively what is among many other things a shared DVD library, shared fancy dress box and shared attic. We're keen to spread the love a little as the more people who join, the more there will be to lend/give away. It's a great way to get to know your neighbours and bolster the community spirit ... as well as saving you money and helping the environment at the same time. It is totally free, takes about three minutes of your time to sign on and the best part is it should give you a warm glow inside, too. Also when it goes nationwide next year - you can say that you were one of the very first to get on board!
