Uncle Tom Cobbly an'all at the 1911 Census
I was looking for the family Berndes who lived in Lakeside Road, Hammersmith formerly called Rayleigh Road - the name was changed because of its bad reputation, it was said, and I was amazed with the number of nationalities living there.2xPolish, 3xFrance, Belgium, 3xAustria, 2xItaly, Switzerland, Russia, Holland, 2xGermany, Spain, Natal, India, Norway, Madagasger, 2xAustralia, Barbados. And many of the rest from all over the UK.With a really diverse range of professions - right across the social spectrum. I must say that when I lived there, in the late forties, I found it to be a very inviting street with friendly waves and nods to everybody especially at the top end in the flats where everybody sat on the steps on sunny days Sad to relate that there were no Berndes.
