The Kindness of Strangers
I returned home the other evening to find a handwritten note on my door informing me that while riding a bus by my house, the author of the note noticed that my keys were in my front door. On a return journey, this passenger observed that the keys were gone. This kind person wanted to alert me to the possibility that they had been stolen, adding the sincere wish that I had recovered the keys before anyone could make off with them. I hope that either the passenger or a companion who witnessed this act of kindness can be assured that my husband found the keys in the door and brought them inside. The fact that a stranger would bother to get off the bus, make a detour to my house and leave such a note heartens me, and assures me that our area of Hammersmith is indeed a community. I have benefited from the same spirit in Shepherd's Bush market, where a number of merchants united to help me when my wallet was stolen at one of the stalls. Such kindness inspires more of the same, and puts into perspective the anti-social behavior that dominates the news. Thank you, kind neighbor. May you receive similar consideration in times of need.
