West Leyton Ltd - Butchers

Does anyone remember a butchers shop along King Street called West Leyton or Layton Ltd from the late 60's or early 70's?

Yes, West layton were part of the Fitch Lovell group,They were an amalgamation of West,s & Layton & Burkett, They then joined with R Gunner provisions & butchers & in the 70,s & traded as West Gunner ltd,They put butchery countersin Key Markets (Worlds store/David Grieg)=Gateway=Safeway = Somerfield now Coop,West Gunner was sold to Vestey group to join their Dewhurst chain dissolved in 95,Anyone wanting more info can email me at norman.finnimore@yahoo.com

There was a chain of butchers shops called West Layton in times gone by. I've seen them somewhere..but can't remember where!.Remembering old shops and buidlings etc before they change hands or are pulled down is one of my pastimes in recent years. People are often asking about Eel Pie shops and the like. I even have some old ration books, once belonging to friends living off Paddenswick Road..listing the shops from where they could obtain their milk and other essentials.You might find this website interesting...Hammersmith bygones are often recalled by those contributing to the site. I vaguely remember a butchers on the King St. just around the corner from the market - but this memory is from 1939, when I used to help my granma on her late Saturday night shopping - always that little bit cheaper late on a Saturday - That too was the time when the Poor Clares were out collecting the leftover bread
