Denying Women Cheaper Car Insurance is Sexist
With reference to the news today that some judge has decided that insurance companies are not allowed to charge women drivers lower premiums I just like to say this is a totally wrong-headed ruling.Insurance companies price risk and genuine equality would come from an equivalent risk being priced the same. Women are safer drivers so the cost of insuring them should reflect that. The ruling means that they effectively subsidise less careful male drivers. To take this policy to its logical conclusion it must be the case that ageism in premium setting also needs to be dealt with therefore insurance companies should not be allowed to charge high premiums for teenage drivers or give discounts to people with long experience of trouble free motoring.
