Andy, we have the ultimate power over the expansion of these discount shops by simply voting with out feet and going elsewhere. Rather than providing a window on our economy, what these shops have highlighted are the overblown margins which, as you say, the Morrisons and Tescos of this world make from non-food items. The fact that the Poundlands, Poundworlds and 99p shops, etc attract such substantial footfall wherever they open means that hard pressed families, perhaps not as well heeled as you or I, can afford a range of household goods which might otherwise be beyond their means.
