Eight Out of Ten Londoners Support Thames Tideway Tunnel

A new survey has revealed that more than eight out of ten (85 per cent) Londoners support the Thames Tideway Tunnel.The survey, conducted bythe independent market research company ComRes, showed that 43 per cent of respondents (based on a telephone poll of 2,400 capital residents), strongly support the project. Opposition was registered by 11 per cent of the representative cross section of people surveyed. The sample for the survey was weighted towards the boroughs directly affected by the tunnel’s construction, but also took in residents of all local authority areas in Greater London. Over half of all the participants (54 per cent) declared that improving the quality of water in the river was a high priority for them.(From the Thames Tideway Magazine)

I was interviwed. A series of questions were asked - 'If we told you (terrible thing is happening) would you be more likely to support the tunnel'? Examples were putting raw sewage in, hypodermic syringes, etc. Clearly, nobody is going to say 'no', but there was no facility to say it makes no difference, which would be the correct answer if you oppose  it. The correct answer was to refuse to answer, which is what I did. Most people would innocently agree, hence the skewed findings, which is what the survey was designed to do.

Pretty sure that it would be 8 of 10 against in any of the areas likely to be blighted by the construction of the thing.

Surveys can be very easily manipulated to give you the answer you want so very little credence should be given to one commissioned by the sponsors of the project. We had similar surveys telling us how popular the West London tram was - the election suggested the opposite.That said I am in favour of the tunnel but as someone who doesn't have to live with the initial negative impact I'm not sure my view should count.
