Best and worst of the Olympic opening ceremony

Best has to be between the Red Arrows, the forgng of the Olympic rings and the lighting of the cauldronWorst has to be between Rowan Atkinson and Paul McCartney both of which were toe curlingly awful

I just think the whole of the games, both the Olympics and ParaOlympics was absolutely phenomonal and utterly brilliant.  Leaving aside the unbelievable achievements of all our athletes it just goes to show what people can do when all pulling together.

You need to listen to Christian O'Connell breakfast show on Absolute Radio on Monday......they are going to be playing Spandau Ballet’s ‘Gold’ for each Gold Medal won! And Tony Hadley will perform the song live.

Surely after all the success the Bowie song that should be performed at the closing ceremony is Golden Years. A call to Spandau Ballet may be in order too!

No idea if this is true but..........."Russell Brand is scheduled to perform a comedy version of the Sex Pistols’ song Pretty Vacant with Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders – all in full punk get-up. Brand is also due to perform The Beatles’ song I Am The Walrus.A tribute to British fashion will see supermodels Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Stella Tennant, Lily Cole and Georgia Jagger strut down a catwalk to the David Bowie songs Fashion and Rebel Rebel, although the singer himself will not be there.

Please tell me the Russell Brand thing is a hoax! The opening ceremony was a bit of a curate's egg as far as I was concerned but this would be a new low. The actual proper sport bit of the Olympics though has been uniformly fantastic. Amazing atmosphere for the cycle road race.

Hi Paul, well regardless of what was liked/disliked I think overall it was a spectacular opening event, and I know it is still early days, but so far it is proving to be a tremendous success.  I have never been so interested in sport!  I do believe, though, that the closing ceremony is going to feature Russell Brand........singing.  I cringe just thinking about it!

Carol, precisely my thoughts other than you are slightly harsh on Mr Bean and Paul MacCartney both of whom are genuine international icons so possibly needed to be included even if we should have known from the Queen's Jubilee Concert he would struggle.The other problem for me was the inclusion of the Suffragettes. As a Kiwi female who was watching the event with us at the time pointed out it was very arrogant to imply that we were somehow in the vanguard of awarding women the vote internationally. Also the presence of 'Words not Deeds' placards elevated the Suffragettes over the Suffragistes (the non-violent part of the movement) and, in a sense endorsed terrorism. This served to undermine the brave and touching tribute soon after to the victims of 7/7.
