Surface Level Crossings

You say today that Angela Bray opposes the proposal for a surface level crossing from the Town Hall to the river. The A4 cuts off the centre of Hammersmith from the river. The crossing by Bridge Avenue works very well and is a civilsed way to cross the road. Hopefully we will see surface level crossings along the A4. I would particlarly like to see surface level crossings on the south side of the Hammersmith Gyratory, crossing from the central island to the Apollo, and crossing the Fulham Palace road. It would create a human space going towards the river and points south.The motor car is not king. Give a bit of the space back to pedestrians and cyclists.John Griffithswww.hfcyclists.org.uk

As previously mentioned it could come from selling off the land, though intense building along that strip is little better a prospect than the existing A4. Ideally we'd have the road underground, and a linear park where it used to be; oh, and possibly a railway replacing the road.... er, hang on, isn't that called the District Line?

We all agree the current underpasses by the Town Hall and St Peters are pretty grim and that they do cut off the Riverside area from Hammersmith, but surface level crossings are a hair brained scheme. The traffic along the A4 is bad enough in the mornings, but imagine the traffic fumes from cars backing up from these crossings. At night, I think I would prefer to risk the underpass rather than being mown down by cars going at 50mph. The crossings by Bridge Avenue are very different, since they do not cross the A4 - only the slip road.The short term solution is the upgrade the underpasses and add CCTV. In the long term, I like the idea of putting the A4 underground - where the money would come from is a different matter!

What a hair-brained scheme!,there will definatly be more accidents with a surface crossing on this main Trunk road.Just upgrade the subway.When at all possible keep pedestrians and cars separated, its the best way!

I also agree. Angela Bray is perhaps not aware how difficult the A4 is to cross, and how far aware it can make the riverside feel to residents that need to cross it.How we use the allocate the limited space we have available in London is always going to be contentious, but I do feel that the car cannot take first here.
