A new contractor has been appointed to finish the refurbishment of a Hammersmith tower block after the former company went into administration before the work was done.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is to spend more than £430,000 on a contract with construction company Greyline, which will complete the works to Linacre Court on Great Church Lane near the Hammersmith Flyover.

The original contractor, Breyer Group, was awarded a £1.8 million contract in October 2023 to refurbish the tower and construct a new community centre.

The works began in January 2024 though came to a halt in April this year after Breyer ceased trading due to financial difficulties.

Construction News reported at the time that RSM UK Restructuring Advisory had been appointed as administrators and were “exploring all options, including a potential sale of certain parts of the business”.

Linacre Court is an 18-storey residential block with 69 flats occupied by council tenants.

According to the decision report published following the awarding of the contract to Breyer, “The project is seeking to address the main issue of the existing windows, which at 30 years old have reached the end of their service life. Other works to the building fabric include concrete and brickwork repairs to ensure homes are safe, secure and wind and weathertight. The project will also provide a new purpose-built community centre.”

While much of the work was complete by the time Breyer went into administration, there remained some redecorations to the tower and final bits to be done to the community centre.

A range of internal works in the tower also need to be finished, such as to the kitchen facilities and finishes to walls and floors.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council agreed to waive a competitive process for the contract due to the urgency required.

Greyline already works on void, or empty, properties in the borough and has delivered other projects “to a high standard”, according to a decision notice.

Greyline was approached for comment.
